Last night Winnie and I hit Cypress again. It was dead quiet; it had also been about 5 days since any measurable fresh snow. So we went up expecting things to be perhaps OK. And they were precisely that: A fair bit of messy snow and a fair number of icy patches. But it didn't suck and we quickly agreed a good 6 or 8 runs would be just fine.

And so on run 6 or 7 I was coming down behind Winnie on  Panorama. Come down one bit  I saw a hump of snow just a bit too late to avoid it or to carve a turn across it. I hit air and came down hard, catching my edge and doing a propellor thing. Head and back slammed hard into snow with very little cushion in it.

Sat up, did a quick inventory and felt the ringing. Best decision seemed to be to get down the mountain safely and quickly, which I did. Winnie dropped me home and after a bit thought it best to hit emergency (one eye dilated, one not is not a good thing usually).

Were there less than an hour and after a good neurologic work up, came home. Expected to wake up in pain, but it's not been bad at all.

Wear a helmet kids.  And I won't be boarding again until it's spring skiing or there's fresh snow.

Ouch!

You really don't expect snow to hurt, but I suppose if it's icy and packed hard, then it's gonna hurt....

I can imagine the one pupil dilated would have been a little scary.... *yikes*

Psst...

They're called Brain Buckets for a REASON!

Hope you're feeling better!

(Next you're going to tell me that you have a motorcycle. And that you ride without a helmet!)

Ouch!

One eye dilated, one not is not a sight that I would want to see.

I'm glad you didn't get any serious damage. But yes, wear a helmet next time, please!

Personally? Having grown up with the ski set, I've seen quite a few bad accidents. Only one that could have plausibly been lessened by a helmet though. I've only had one incident where I came close to needing one myself - and I was a wild animal on the board - but of course what actually got hurt was my knee. I've enjoyed uncountable full-body slams so maybe my brain has shrunk or something, but if I were to do it all over again, no, I wouldn't wear a helmet. Call me old-school. ;-)
