It's many months away, but the 2010 Eurovision high drama is already ratcheting up. Jade, who brought the UK to 5th place this year has joined the Sugarbabes, a very successful British girl group. Smart move Jade: high profile, already plugged in to great producers and songwriters.

But it's Bulgaria that's got me all excited! Last year, as I'm sure all of you recall (*cough*), they had their usual 75 weeks of qualifiers, only to introduce some "wildcards" at the final stage. Everyone thought Grafa's "Vrag" had it locked...except the televote went overwhelmingly to another wildcard: the castrati (and not a terribly good one) Krassimir Avramov and "Illusion." The illusion was that he could cary a tune: he couldn't. Adding three banshees and their atonal caterwauling didn't help either. Even before Krassi got to the actual Eurovision the Bulgarian music industry was apoplectic.

So for 2010 the Bulgarian entrant will be pre-selected. S/he/they will sing several songs during a national final and the song will be picked either wholly by televote (that worked out well for 2009) or a combined televote and jury. This system generally produces a good result: Ireland's only top 10 since 2000 was when Brian Kennedy did this; Elena Paparizou won for Greece in 2005 this way too. With a proper, professional artist, all you need is one good song...and that song to be picked.

My money is on Grafa. But i wouldn't be surprised to see Azis if they simply want to get a lot of attention. Though Azis isn't known for his strong live vocals either (but boy can he lip sync!).

Well they've sent a song every year since 2004, but not done well. During the 2006 national final, when the interval act came on the entire country seemed to say "why can't we vote for this?". So next year they could: one of the wild cards, Elitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yakoulov, roared to victory in Sofia, then rocked up to 5th place with the amazing, haunting "Voda" at the Eurovision itself:

I vaguely remember that somebody blamed it on "the gay mafia" that Krassi Avramov got through, but alas, I can't remember any details. LOL LOL LOL
