olympic update
Feb. 24th, 2010 10:16 pmAfter bidding adieu to the relatives, things Olympic are roaring towards a conclusion. Here's brief rundown of the week so far:
Monday: My pals Virg and Meg and I were at the Pacific Coliseum for the Ice Dance Free program. There was a lot of skill and two examples of the discipline at its very best. Watching Virtue & Moir and Davis & White skate was an honor: roaring "O Canada" during a live Victory Ceremony complete with medals was intense. We three lingered in the building as long as we could. Afterwards I stopped down at the cauldron to get some video of it at night. Go see it at night it's lovely!
Tuesday: volunteer shift, then a date night with my husband. Who's been a trooper of an Olympic widow.
Wednesday: Megs and I were at the Richmond Olympic Oval for the women's 5000m speedskating. Clara Hughes at 37 earned her 6th Olympic medal, tying her with Cindy Klassen. She'll retire with one gold, one silver and 4 bronze medals in speedskating and road cycling. No one else in the world has been a multiple medallist in both the Summer and Winter Games. Martina Sablikova and Stephanie Beckert were wholly deserving of their gold and silver medals.
Tonight on TV I watch Canada 1 and 2 earn gold and silver in bo
Before the skate I'd booked us a table at the restaurant in Heineken Holland House near the Oval. It's a world of orange, with lots of fun stuff and some decent food. I suspect the place goes OFF at night. If I could stay up that late, I mean.
Thursday: In the morning I'm giving a torchbearer talk to a good friend's son's daycare. Then it's the women's gold medal hockey game followed by the last 2-3 flights of the women's free program in figure skating. I'll miss at least the first 6 skaters, but as long as I make the last 2 flights (12 skaters) I'll be happy.
Friday: volunteer in the morning followed by the mother of all short track nights (men's relay, women's 1000m, men's 500m).
Saturday: men's gold medal curling and date night with hubbie.
Sunday: men's gold medal hockey and then watching the closing on TV. Followed by weeping.
