OTTAWA - A new public opinion poll suggests the debate over same-sex marriage continues to divide Canadians, especially along generational lines.

The poll, conducted by the firm NFOCF Group, found Canadians younger than 35 are far more supportive of legalizing gay and lesbian marriages than people of retirement age.The poll found more than 60 per cent of the respondents younger than 35 support same-sex marriages. An equal percentage of seniors oppose it. But the results also suggest that Canadians on both sides of the issue have little appetite for marriage to be left exclusively to churches. There's also a feeling that the courts in Canada have too much power.

But in general:

+ 52% of Canadians say there is nothing morally wrong with homosexuality

+ 57% of Canadians say that homosexual marriage does not threaten the institution of marriage

+ 65% of Canadians say homosexual couples should be treated the same as heterosexual couples

+ 58% of Canadians reject the idea that marriage should only be a matter of religion (in other words, no civil marriage, only civil unions)

It was an interesting set of figures, especially the regional breakdown. No real surprises, either.

What stuck in my mind from The National was the comment--often repeated--that the word 'marriage' was what stuck in most people's throats.

I have no doubts... in our slow, typically cautious way, we'll draft and enact a law.. Stephen Harper and the more vocal members of the Alliance Party will make goats of themselves (yet again).. et voilĂ ! gay marriage will be legal in Canada.

It was very heartening to see that the majority of Canadians believe no religion has any business in the running of the country. :)

BTW, even though it's been a bit heartbreaking for you, welcome home. :)

that word too

Those are appalling figures. Especially the 'morally wrong' one.
