Well, I managed to survive my first Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.

And it was a blast! For me, who’s only heard of it through 2nd and 3rd party accounts, no complaints. A bit smaller? Big enough at 300k spectators. Not as political as years past? Lots of gestures (large and small) about queer rights and the war.

Not being much of a stand-on-the-sides kinda fella, I marched with ‘The Harbour City Bears. Or rather, rolled with ‘em, on my ‘blades. The rationale being to : 1.) walk less; and 2.) have more fun. And I was half right; enthusiasm led me to skate.....up the route.....back down the route....up the route.....around the truck.....between the banners....on the left....on the right. Working the crowd up along the way.

And I did fall, but only once. Saw something shiny and glittery on the road and impulse made me lunge for it. And fall ass over teakettle, not a good thing when shirtless, but not a scratch on me. Because Jaysus luvs me jus the way I izzz

We laughed. We cried. We hurled. It was fab. Then it was party time. The party

Parading took remarkably little time--are you paying attention SF and NY--and we were wrapped up by 21h30, and we were in the middle-late third of the groups. So we were told to go directly to the party, which we did. Which wasn’t open: gates were due to open at 22h. So we waited for a bit. To give you an idea of how early we were, my coat check # was 26.

After some exploring it was time to do chems--how else can you do an all-night dance fest, eh? I did a hit of flat white. Yes, as in the coffee, since caffeine is the only drug I do anymore. Wandered around, checking things out, this groove, that groove. Ran into a friend from SF, and spent the night dancing with him and his friends, all lovely, all on e.

Haven’t been around people high in a looong time, and I’ll take 10,000 people on e over 20 guys on alcohol any day. Peaceful, gentle, and oh so complimentary. I felt pretty, loved, and valuable. And I knew it was largely because of their buzzes. Whatever, I was giving the luvving sober, and took it on its own terms.

But eventually the combined cardio of ‘blading and dancing 4 hours took its toll. At 03h30 I bid the boyz adieu, and left the party. Feeling elated though exhausted. Will I ever do it again, probably not...would I, you betcha.
