Top court rejects bid to appeal same-sex ruling
Last Updated Thu, 09 Oct 2003 12:07:31
OTTAWA - The Supreme Court has rejected a bid by religious and family groups to stop same-sex marriage.
INDEPTH: Same Sex Rights
The top court upheld a ruling by an Ontario court that found the traditional definition of marriage to be unconstitutional.
The Association for Marriage and the Family in Ontario and the Interfaith Coalition on Marriage and Family had hoped to appeal the ruling after the federal government refused to do so.
The Liberals drafted legislation on same-sex marriage and referred it to the Supreme Court for an opinion.
If the Supreme Court decides that the draft legislation is constitutional, it will be put to a free vote in the House of Commons – meaning members of Parliament would not have to vote along party lines.
If passed, Canada would become the world's third country to allow same-sex marriage.

Date: 2003-10-09 11:26 am (UTC)okay. this thing about gay marriages [when one disagrees with the idea] denigrating *your own* marriage by the simple fact that it happens. i really don't get that. there are plenty of marriages out there that i don't care for all that much. abusive ones, for instance. however, the fact that someone else has an abusive marriage does not devalue *my* marriage in any fashion. how can you figure that marriages happening which you dislike, somehow makes your own marriage less meaningful? HOW?!?
i know this in incoherent. i'm sorry for letting my head fly off in your comments. this just bugs the bejeebers out of me, that we're even TALKING about this crap.
