There are days where the banalities of life--and the challenges--weigh heavily upon my soul. And there are days when I am veritably lifted up by the world and those around me.

Today is certainly of latter.

Just in from seeing The Pianist, Polanski’s film about a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust. Not an easy film to watch, but certainly (in my mind) the best film of the year. And Adrian Brody carries it pretty much throughout. There’s a lot in this film, but what sticks in my mind is how a society values its art, and how art can help us better understand--and, hopefully value--society. Some of the most poignant scenes are simply the artist and his music. Breathtaking.

Am also working my way--with renewed vigour--The Penguin Book of Gay Australian Writing. Not merely fiction, as it includes some biographical excepts and a few essays. Not altogether brilliant, but much of it interesting. Am 1/3 of the way through.

Finally, I always get a buzz when I tap into MC-squared, also known as Mary Chapin Carpenter. If there’s a more compelling voice in contemporary music, I don’t know it. And she’s as good rockin’ out and whimsical as she is contemplative and spiritual. An artist of the first order. If you’re interested, I’d recommend starting with “Stones in the Road” or “Time Sex Love”. And skip “A Place in the World,” though it’s ok, it represents a bit of a letdown compared to her other stuff.

So....here are my favourite MC-squared songs, and the albums from whence they came:

10. He Thinks He’ll Keep Her, Come on come on
9.Why Walk when You can Fly, Stones in the Road
8, Whenever You’re Ready, Time/Sex/Love
7. Down at the Twist and Shout, Shooting Straight in the Dark
6. The Hard Way, Come on come on
5. The Moon & St. Christopher, Shooting Straight in the Dark
4.This is Love, Stones in the Road
3. Only a Dream, Come on, Come on
2. The Dreaming Road, Time/Sex/Love
1. Jubilee, Stones in the Road

It’s all good.

I really like it when LJ'ers like yourselof recommend their personal faves in music. And, although I don't use it myself, even though I play music while on the PC, I'm also always interested in what people enter in the "Music I'm listening to" field along with their post.

So . . I will investigate MCC. Thanks for the tip.

Yup, all good. My fave is a weird one: "I Am a Town" from Come On Come On. I'm a sucker for a cello and a wistful lyric. It sounds like an old Americana painting in some forgotten corner of a museum.
