La fête nationale du Québec

Aujourd’hui (le 24 juin) c’est la fête nationale du Québec--et aussi en Terre-Neuve. Le Québec est le coeur du culture francophone canadien.

Vive le Québec! Vive le Canada! J’ai partie d’eux! On est cana’ien et on en suis fier!

I find this city to be highly segmented. Perhaps it's risidual from when the burroughs were their own cities,

Heh... a couple of years ago, i wrote about this on a forum. People didn't understand. I moved here from Toronto back in 1989 and yeah, it's always struck me how neighbourhood-oriented people are -- and i'm no different. I live in the Plateau, i work downtown, but i rarely go downtown other than for work, and i don't know anything about any other areas of the city. I sort of know where they are (NDG, Lachine, etc.) but i have no reason to go there at all. I have no reason to venture more than a 4-5 block radius from where i live since i can find everything i need and then some. I actually like this, compared to how things were in Toronto.

The reality is, all Canadian queers are living off the backs of Québec nationalism. Almost every single step of the path towards equality for us in Canada was instigated or came to fruition because of the strong influence the PQ on the social union, within Québec and ultimately Canada-wide. Trudeau, Chrétien and most other Québec federalist politicians are also a product of that milieu. We owe the Quiet Revolution more than a little thanks.

Most anglo Canadians aren't aware or won't acknowledge this. And right now it's the Bloc who've forced the Liberals to commit in writing to calling a vote on equal marriage before the summer recess.

That's why I celebrate la fête. I'm grateful that those who wish to break up Canada have, in fact, made this country's social union among the most progressive in the world.

Now the taxation in Québec is fooked, especially in light of the services proferred. But I'd live there in a heartbeat, given a good job for me and the husband. Though I'd still end up in Vancouver no doubt. I like my laidback life.
