Canada is getting closer
Jul. 12th, 2005 11:34 amHave I mentioned how much I love my Canadian mobile carrier, Fido? When they first launched in Canada
toneyvr scored a free ride on their zeppelin, thanks to his corporate shivery. It took a few years before either of us found out about Fido and their flexible approach to mobile services. Don't want a contract? Fine. Got a lot of friends on Fido's network? For $5 more a month it's free to call and SMS. Want a new phone, it's free with a 2 year contract, or you pay for it...but "good" customers get it usually for about half the price listed on Fido website.
Anyway I tried to order
querrelle's new mobile service via the web, but it would only take an order in his name if we used his credit card and it was a Canajun credit card. D'oh! Today I rang Fido and they said "we'll put it in your name; just ring when you get here and he has a SIN and we'll switch it to his name, no problem." We even worked out an optimal day for it to be shipped to Tone's place (and to Tone, so he can sign for it). And then the fella says "let's pick him a good number" and we get him a number almost identical to mine--1 digit off! I'm 3069, Max is 3068.
That's my kind of kapitalism! Consumers of the world unite!

Date: 2005-07-12 10:20 am (UTC)So I ...oh, here's my reply to them:
"It sucks to wait. It's inexcusable to be left in the dark on your
application after months or years. But dissing non-whites because
they've been successful puts yourselves in a very poor light.
Presuming some of these are also family class migrants--who might have
been waiting longer then you if they aren't spouses or dependent
children--do you think they're less deserving of a place for your
partner(s)?
Or perhaps refugees--legitimate political refugees under the rather
strict terms for such cases in Canada? How thoughtless of them to seek
safety in Canada.
Greater Vancouver is nearly 40% non-Caucasian based on the 2001
census, a figure based on self-identification. Bear in mind that a
number of Canadians do not identify as "visible minorities" if they
were born here. Arguably the figure is a bit higher than that. And
about the same percentage are foreign born, "white" and "non-white"
alike.
A lot of people have faced the sorts of challenges you face , in terms
of delays and unanswered questions--and haven't felt the need (at
least in public) to spout such crap. Try the high road; you'll find
folks much more sympathetic.
As one of those "same-sex" people, I take Jaz's comments particularly
personally. If it's so troubling to you, leave Canada or don't come.
We don't have many regressive, backwards, narrowminded people in
Canada, but we don't need any more either.
