Suffice to say I'm choked with anger, want to envelope him in a perma-cuddle, and have a instinctive urge to ride the #239 again and again, pummelling each anglo male adolescent who boards it. Ooooh, that's not very social justice of me.

When someone near and dear to me was assaulted, they didn't let me know right away, possibly because they expected my gut reaction when they told me, which was "Do I need to buy a gun and shoot this person?" It sort of just slipped out. I was that upset.

Sounds like boys from Surrey.

When I was in Vancouver back in 1998 or so, there was a story going round. After the bar, the local gays would congregate at a diner-type restaurant near the bars. One night, some boys from Surrey (where there seems to be something in the water) decided to come in and raise some hell. They ended up outside the restaurant at the same time as a particularly obvious gay man.

They decided to be "big men" and started beating on the man. What they didn't realize was that the restaurant was filled with big, butch members of a gay motorcycle club. They were spotted, just starting to beat on the lone gay man. Someone raised the alarm and and the restaurant emptied, with the motorcycle men surrounding, restraining and maybe "accidentally" injuring the idiots a little (or a lot).

The jugheads thought they were saved when they police showed up, but the dozens of witnesses (including a couple of gay lawyers) quickly explained that the nice visitors were only restraining the idiots from hurting the slightly beaten gay man. The idiots were arrested, stunned by it all, with the police thanking the visitors.

It may not be true, but it certainly felt good at the time.

I must admit, if I had to make a list of people to come home to after having been bashed, your home would be high on the list.

Hope that you both are able to find some healing over the coming weeks. I know it's a slow gradual process, and hope that he gets the support he needs in the rest of the world as well.
