It was fun.Once.

When the show started, I thought “oh cool, she’s still got her voice.” By the third song it was clear that, voice or not, Debbie Harry didn’t have any wind. So a lot of the longer notes were clipped. Or not sung at all. And what I first took as a quirky style of dancing onstage, probably reflects a lack of cardio capacity.

Not that I’m in better shape. But I don’t charge 100$ a head for folks to watch me waddle. Did I say that out loud?

Regardless, [livejournal.com profile] querrelle and I had a great time. We sand, we danced, we smooched, we laughed at poor Debbie. We perved Clem Burke, who still drums like a madman—a very skilled madman. Of the original members, the only ones not present were Jerry Harrison (no longer with the group, dunno why) and Chris Stein (ill and back in the States). Jimmy Destri and Frank Infante were excellent on the ‘boards, as were the guest guitarists and bass player. Band-wise, they were tight. And the set was nearly 2 hours with no break. We got our money’s worth.

Here’s what I can recall from the playlist…having only 2 brain cells left over from the 80s, my short-term memory ain’t the best:

(something new and unknown)
Dreaming
Sunday Girl
The Hardest Part
Atomic
Call Me
Hanging On The Telephone
The Tide Is High
One Way Or Another
Union City Blues
War Child
Maria
Rapture
Heart of Glass

I was afraid Rapture would be a disaster, and it wasn’t. Atomic and Heart of Glass were probably the best. No 11:59, no Denis, no The Hardest Part.

But I don’t charge 100$ a head for folks to watch me waddle.

In 1982, as a wee lad watching MTV, I first saw Dale Bozzio (http://www.fantasma.com/tours/gallery/images/Dale%20Bozzio.jpg) and Missing Persons (http://www.neteze.com/space/cds/gifs/m/springsessionm.jpg). They quickly became a central group in my pantheon of new wave bands, among names like Devo, A Flock of Seagulls and the Go Gos.

In 1998, I finally got to see them live, in a little bar on Orlando's club strip. Dale had so completely let herself go (to the point that she was wearing a baggy, grey business suit, to cover herself up) that I've had no desire to see any new wave reunion tours since. I'd rather live with my memories and CDs than see another sad, pathetic display like a rock star trying to milk their fame...

Worse. I saw Miss Grace "Thunder Thighs" Jones headlining a dance party to celebrate Hong Kong handover in 1997. The sight of all that heaving flesh was enough to turn the stomach. Most of the assembled drug-fucked bright young things didn't have the faintest idea who she was and just wanted her to get off so the DJs could do their thing.

*gasps*

Grace Jones got big?

I remember her both in the "Demolition Man" video as well as Conan the Destroyer. In both cases, I remember thinking just how thin and scrawny she was. I guess gravity really does get us all in the end. ;X)

I was too young to see the Go Gos on their first tours. I finally got to see them on the 1990 Peta benefit tour. That was a great show--two hours of pure, sheer bliss. :X)

She will always be a goddess to me....

But Debbie always was a bit quircky, always a bit off. Her sideways smiled explained a lot. My favorite 80's concerts of good 80's music? Blanc Mange, OMD (both at Cabaret Metro, Chicago) and Nina Hagen, all in the early-mid 80's.

Yeah, haven't seen Blondie in concert but recent footage suggests Debbie has gotten heavier. Did she ever have much breath, though? I recall her assessment of The Waitresses: "oh, great, another band with a female lead singer who always goes flat, just like me."

At least they don't seem to have done anything from "The Hunter."

And supposedly Dale Bozzio from Missing Persons is originally from right here in Somerville.
