It was grade 6, it was '76, the year of the US bicentennial. I was in the midst of a transition from "nerdy super-student" to "stoner bad boy". Yeah, 12 is rather hideously early to begin nurturing substance misuse issues, but 'twas my birthright.

All kidding aside, it was the beginning of a really tough period in my life. I was increasingly cynical about school (which had been my saving grace until then), the 'hey faggot' namecalling was escalating--and resonating in a way it hadn't previously, and my heart was hardening to my Da's particular brand of homophobia: baby's first resentment.

I came out of that dark period in 1990--almost 15 years later.

I was just getting my first short n curlies around this time. The only other guy in my class with "pubes"was Oscar Fernandes--who had been left back 2 years when he emigrated from Portugal.

A year later I was the height I am now (1,67m), and starting to shave.

I think we all have photos from circa age 12 where we look kinda like this. I do have photos of me in the 1980’s at some family function or other, where I was reeled into wearing some preppie-style atrocity. I just look back on those photos and think, “was that really me”?

It is the fake smile a lot of kids start putting on at that age.
