Lady Liberty Lesbian?
Oct. 29th, 2005 10:35 amIt was grade 6, it was '76, the year of the US bicentennial. I was in the midst of a transition from "nerdy super-student" to "stoner bad boy". Yeah, 12 is rather hideously early to begin nurturing substance misuse issues, but 'twas my birthright.
All kidding aside, it was the beginning of a really tough period in my life. I was increasingly cynical about school (which had been my saving grace until then), the 'hey faggot' namecalling was escalating--and resonating in a way it hadn't previously, and my heart was hardening to my Da's particular brand of homophobia: baby's first resentment.
I came out of that dark period in 1990--almost 15 years later.
