All I want for
Oh, and the Liberals as Betty's Loyal Opposition. Let Paul Martin Junior unpinch his "I hadda make same-sex marriage legal! I hadda!" nose and go back to the private sector, where mediocre leadership isn't nearly as damaging.

Date: 2006-01-20 05:46 pm (UTC)Ouch, that's pretty harsh considering you're talking about (at least) one Québécois out of two and almost everyone I know artisitically and through my belle-famille. I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, believe me, but the Bloc is a legitimate political party and if you talk to people here, you'll see why their hopes for sovereignty are not crazsy or racist or fascist or old-fashioned. I've always thought that the one element missing from the whole debate is that Canadians from the rest of the provinces and Québécois do not speak to each other about this issue... They just complain back and forth!

Date: 2006-01-20 06:08 pm (UTC)I've actually got a long, established rapport with quebecois friends of all political leanings--to at least 1990.
And I didn't say sovereigntist. Or nationalist.

Date: 2006-01-20 07:46 pm (UTC)I grew up in Ottawa, lived in Quebec, am bilingual, have family on both sides of the "border" and I resent the fuck out of anyone that wants to split up my country/nation.
The original comment was directed at "separatists", not "quebeckers"... And I'm totally fine with that!
For Duceppe to be included in the "national" debates and the Green Party (which has arguably the most humane platform and is a "national" party) to be excluded, was just pathetic.

Date: 2006-01-20 08:05 pm (UTC)I fear that if we get a Conservative minority government, and they don't screw up, that we can eventually face a Conservative majority as people are 'softened' to them. Once they get a majority, it's like Gordo in BC all over again.
Best case scenario, Cons get the minority and then screw it up as the wingnuts come out of the woodwork.
No Idea
Date: 2006-01-20 11:57 pm (UTC)How many support gay marriage? And is that likely to be rolled back?
Re: No Idea
Date: 2006-01-21 01:10 am (UTC)NDP: social democrats. never even the Official Opposition nationally; most seats 43. Currently 18. Only party that did not allow a free vote on same-sex marriage.
Bloc: Québec separatist party, only runs in Québec. Mostly social democratic, but a handful of right-wing members from rural ridings. Created in '90, sworn to only run candidates in one election cycle (93), 5 elections later...
Greens: 4% national vote, never a seat. Not a factor. oh and more pro-business than most other Green parties worldwide.
Liberals: centrist party, big-tent, more leftish, but solidly pro-business. Brought down human rights code and SSM legislation--but only after the courts compelled it, and even then they allowed the only 2 free votes on human rights issues in the last 30 years nationally. Not enemies but we are treated expediently.
Conservative: almagation of a British Tory (small government, libertarian) and regional social conservative (rural mostly) parties. Voted almost entirely against SSM. Many members, including leader, are evangelical Xtians.
